How to Keep Your Social Security Paper Checks After Sept. 30

Starting October 1, 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will stop mailing paper checks to almost all beneficiaries, switching to direct deposit or the Direct Express® prepaid debit card.

However, you may still qualify for an exemption and continue receiving paper checks, but you must request it before Sept. 30.

Who Can Still Get Paper Checks?

The U.S. Treasury’s GoDirect® program allows paper checks only in rare cases:

  • You are 90 years or older

  • You have a mental impairment that makes electronic payments impossible

  • You live in a remote location without access to banking or electronic payment systems

How to Request an Exception?

  1. Call the Treasury’s Waiver Line: 1-855-290-1545

  2. Ask for the "Electronic Payment Waiver" form

  3. Complete & Mail the Form with proof of your situation

Other Options If You Don’t Qualify

Bottom line: If you want to keep receiving paper Social Security checks, you must act before Sept. 30, 2025 and meet strict eligibility rules. Call now to avoid payment interruptions.
